  • Seniors went to the computer lab to meet with counselors regarding applytexas.org. They also made an account and acquired a barcode for the college fair coming up soon. You can do this yourself by going to gotocollegefairs.com

    • Short Fiction: Thesis statements were turned in for compare / contrast essay.
    • HW due Wed. 9/26/18:  Research colleges / universities you are interested in attending to see which essay topics you will need to complete for their applications. Come to class knowing which ApplyTexas (or other) essay topics you need to complete for your applications. Here are some resources to help you:

      1. Read:
                              A. "Writing About Literature" p. 21-26 (orange), p. 20-24 (red), p. 21-26 (purple)
                              B. "Writing a Comparison-Contrast" p. 42-46 (orange), p. 38-43 (red), p. 43-51 (purple)

                    2. Write a clear, carefully stated thesis statement (JUST the thesis) that responds to the 
                         topic below. Write your thesis out on a piece of notebook paper to turn in.

    • Written Response: Instead of writing a response today, please complete and turn in the assignment on quotations from "The Yellow Wallpaper" that we started on Friday:
      • Choose one quotation that intrigues you and write a one-page analysis of it that:
        1. Explains the meaning of the quotation in your own words and
        2. Develops a point about the quotation (agree/disagree/qualify, take it a step further, make an educated guess about the consequences of the quotation...)
    • Discussion of mini essay: Youth in "Araby" and "The Nightingale and the Rose". You can revise if you come to speak to me about your paper first.
    • "Setting" and "Point of View" text notes
      • 1B: Open notes quiz
      • Q&A on notes

    • Discussion of Formalism/New Criticism & New Historicism literary criticism from the homework assignment.
      • What is the difference in interpretation using Formalism/NewCriticism vs. New Historicism?
    • Small group discussion: Critical quotes about "The Yellow Wallpaper" by Charlotte Perkins Gilman
      • As a group, discuss at least three of the quotations. Then, individually, choose one quotation that intrigues you and write a one-page analysis of it that:
        1. Explains the meaning of the quotation in your own words and
        2. Develops a point about the quotation (agree/disagree/qualify, take it a step further, make an educated guess about the consequences of the quotation...)

    • REVISION: Mini-Essay on Youth in "Araby" and "The Nightingale and the Rose"
      • Revision for ideas: thesis and development
        • Identify your thesis statement. Check to make sure everything else in your paper relates to that statement. 
        • Look at your order of ideas. Make sure the progression of your ideas is logical.
      • Author revision for 1st 6 wks Focus Correction Areas: 
      • Turn in your revised mini-essay on Google Classroom by the end of the period. Hand in the first draft you brought to class so I can compare your two versions and see your enhancements. 
    • HW due Fri. 9/14/18: DISCOVERY LESSON- Critical Theories: Formalism / New Criticism & New Historicism
      • Use the hyperdoc I've sent to you in Google Classroom to learn about two theories of literary criticism. 
        • Take notes on the white sections.
        • Complete the blue sections for a grade and turn in by class time on Friday.

    • HW due Wed. 9/12/18: 
      • Write a mini-essay (1- 1.5 pages) explaining how "Araby" and "The Nightingale and the Rose" comment on youth. This will be collected at the beginning of class on Wed.
      • Review "The Yellow Wallpaper" by Charlotte Perkins Gilman for work in class.
    • Counselors will have seniors begin completing the Apply Texas college application on Mon 9/24/18. Have you taken the ACT? FYI here are the ACT test dates & registration deadlines:

    • Initial response papers returned with feedback
      • Discussion

    • Notebook Set-up: You will need three sections in your notebook: Notes, Terms & Vocab, Written Responses
    • Reading Literature & Writing About It- Group notes from the summer reading assignments: "Writing About Literature" and Chapter 5 of "Reading Literature Like a Professor"
      • Small groups worked to make notes on the main points of each article and entered them on this shared document (1B) or this one (3B). These ideas will serve as a starting point for our work this year.
    • HW due Thurs. 9/6/18: 
      • Read and take notes on "Plot" and "Character"

        • red book: p. 197-200, p. 235-238
